Porn addiction: understand how and what happens

Gone are the days when accessing pornography was through a magazine drawn in black and white. With time came the magazines with real color photos, pornographic films from the video store, in addition to the “adult entertainment” programs that were already shown in certain cinemas.

In this way, the access to pornography was getting bigger and bigger, but the contemporary crowning came with the internet. The consumption of this material has increased hundreds of times, generating insatiable desires. The out of control set in. Everything was easy, in the palm of your hand, on your cell phone whenever and wherever you want.

How does pornography addiction arise?

Sexual energy is something very strong, as it is linked to the basic instinct of procreation and preservation of life. Not that sex is something exclusive to reproduction. Of course, humans also have sex for pleasure. Always did.

Sexuality is also a social construction. What made you think not, were the religious prescriptions of control, which say that sex can only be for procreation. In this way, several sexual practices aimed at pleasure were considered as deviations and sins, in addition to issues outside the heteronormativity are still seen as “demonic possessions”.

However, the greater the repression, the greater the desire. And porn movies take advantage of this incongruity to grow. Therefore, let’s observe some points that make us understand how pornography addiction arises in today’s society.

sexual misinformation

We live in a society that is not interested in educating about anything, especially when it comes to sexuality. Religious hypocrisy in relation to sex continues to rule, as it is still seen as dirty and sinful.

The lack of knowledge and debate generate distortions in the way of experiencing sexual pleasure. The result: a very distorted view of sex that can lead to addiction and compulsion.

In addition, we can see several effects of this problem in society, such as: infections by diseases, unwanted pregnancy, impulsive marriages, rapes, betrayals, abandoned children, perpetuated unstructured and etc.

society of exaggerations

Yet, we also need to consider the various pressures of life. We live true festivals of exaggeration, competition, consumerism, stimulation of hedonism, irrational freedom, extremism, false moralism and hypersexualization.

In this way, we are treated as if everyone were robots that only need to carry out orders. We always receive the following social messages: buy, be, see, do, produce, have sex and enjoy a lot.

The question of current relationships

Adding to all this comes the liquidity of relationships. The world is fast, disposable and utilitarian. In this way, we live to serve as an instrument for us and the other to reach a certain end: selfish enjoyment.

Then, relationships become real drugs with the aim of alienating and anesthetizing. In fact, according to the addict’s experience, it’s never good, because there can always be stronger and more intense stimuli in relation to their “drug” of choice.

What is pornography addiction

Because of this, pornography appears as an attractive alternative in this society. Immersed in such an offer of unlimited pleasure, porn movies show great sexual performances, bodies considered perfect, large sexual organs and a feeling that the actors are having a lot of pleasure.

In this way, porn represents the culmination of the distortions present in society today. The entry into this medium ends up being attractive, as it works with the exaggerations that people are used to looking for and also arrives as a more volatile and faster offer, that is, it ends soon after the film is shown.

Addicted behavior can be installed precisely because of this thoughtless and automatic life, based on performances, massification and lack of self-knowledge. The subject cannot find other forms of satisfaction, because he does not know who he is.

Furthermore, pornography takes advantage of general sexual misinformation to present performances and bodies that are far from the norm. However, it is attractive for exactly that reason.

The pornographic industry earns billions of dollars every year because of these reasons, however, it still goes a step further. The films even dictate norms of how the body, sex life and desires must be in order to reach ecstasy and fulfillment. In other words, the “perfect” model to be followed and replicated.

How to deal with this addiction to pornography?

The problem with this culture is disillusionment and mismatch with reality. In this sense, the sexual pleasure of everyday relationships begins to be compared with the performances performed in porn, which brings frustration and repression.

Therefore, self-knowledge through psychotherapy and psychiatry is extremely necessary to deal with this situation. Other specializations related to the health area are also very welcome. In addition, it is urgent that we discuss these issues from an early age with our children and young people, through the human and biological sciences and philosophy.

There is no social, philosophical, political, emotional and, above all, sexual education in schools. This should have happened since elementary school. Unfortunately we are living an agenda based on taboo and delay. When there is a serious proposal for education in this sense, there is always a distortion suggesting that there will be stimulation of sex, imposition of a certain sexual or gender orientation, in addition to many other absurdities.

No more taboos, mystifications, dogmas, fears, prejudices, hypocrisies or false moralism. Such an educational process needs to be a public education policy for the State and not for the government. Let’s practice quality health and education.
